Twin display cabinet engineering integrating physical artefact preservation with a digital narrative interpretation at MONA

European Museum Technology engineered two custom display cabinets for the Pausiris Gallery at the Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart, housing the ancient Pausiris mummy alongside a synchronised digital interpretation.

Background & Scope

The Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is on the Berriedale peninsula in Hobart, Tasmania, and is the largest privately funded museum in the Southern Hemisphere. The curatorial brief for the Pausiris Gallery includes a dual-cabinet display that pairs the physical Pausiris mummy with a digital version. This digital display gradually reveals the inside of the casket and the textile wrappings, all the way to the original body.

Monolithic Cabinet Fabrication & Spatial Integration

Detailing the structural design and installation of the two display cabinets within the gallery architecture, establishing exact physical alignment, seal integrity, and structural stability above the reflecting pool floor.

Exhibit Lighting & Digital Display Synchronisation

Outlining the specialised showcase lighting and technical integration engineered to illuminate the physical mummy while synchronising visual clarity with the adjacent digital projection sequence.
