European Museum Technology engineered a lightweight, GPS-tracked transit case with atmospheric pressure control alongside a demountable, bulletproof exhibition showcase for Leonardo da Vinci’s Early Mona Lisa.

Background & Scope

Leonardo da Vinci’s Early Mona Lisa represents one of his earliest interpretations of the portrait, completed 18 years prior to the Louvre masterpiece. As an artwork of profound historical significance, its long-term preservation and public presentation demanded technical solutions capable of managing physical security, transit mobility, and precise environmental parameters across varying international display contexts.

The Mona Lisa Foundation commissioned European Museum Technology to engineer a dual-part display and transport infrastructure. The brief required a highly technical travel case for international transit, paired with a demountable, high-security exhibition showcase tailored for ambulatory exhibition environments.

Precision Transit Engineering & Atmospheric Regulation

To safeguard the artwork during international transport, EMT designed and fabricated a bespoke travel case engineered for single-person handling by couriers and art handlers. The lightweight enclosure integrates an atmospheric pressure control system to protect the painting against pressure fluctuations during transit. EMT incorporated real-time GPS tracking technology within the framework, enabling continuous location monitoring throughout transit.

High-Security Exhibition Enclosure & Remote Climate Management

For exhibition environments, EMT engineered a demountable showcase structure constructed to facilitate straightforward assembly and deinstallation on site. The enclosure incorporates bulletproof glass panels to establish physical protection without compromising optical transparency.

An active environmental control system maintains internal relative humidity and temperature within strict conservation tolerances. To allow curatorial teams to adapt display lighting and climate parameters for specific exhibition requirements, EMT integrated a wireless remote-control management system into the showcase architecture.
