High-security enclosure and custom engineering for Ilya Repin’s masterwork at the Tretyakov Gallery

European Museum Technology engineered a bulletproof, frameless glass museum display case to protect Ilya Repin’s iconic painting Ivan the Terrible and His Son at the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow.

Background & Scope

The Tretyakov Gallery’s painting Ivan the Terrible and His Son, created by Russian artist Ilya Repin, has experienced repeated acts of physical vandalism throughout its history. In May 2018, a visitor broke through its protective glass with a metal bar, shattering the frame and piercing the canvas in three places. While the faces and hands of the figures remained unharmed, the incident prompted the gallery to seek a permanent security intervention.

To safeguard the restored artwork against future risks, the directors of the Tretyakov Gallery commissioned European Museum Technology to design and fabricate a bespoke display case. The project required integrating bulletproof containment and high-capacity structural mechanics into the historical gallery setting.

To meet the institution’s security requirements, European Museum Technology engineered and fabricated a bespoke enclosure measuring 3 metres high by 3.5 metres wide. Following completion at EMT’s Melbourne facilities, the display case was transported overland across a distance exceeding 15,000 kilometres to Moscow, where EMT specialists executed the final assembly using advanced glass-handling equipment.

High-Security Glass Integration & Counterbalanced Mechanics

The display case integrates a frameless, bulletproof, and shatterproof glass panel door weighing more than 400 kilograms. EMT mounted this massive panel using invisible hinges supported by specialised structural bonding compounds.

Despite the glass’s significant mass and dimensions, the structural mechanics are precisely calibrated, allowing a single person to open the balanced door mechanism effortlessly for gallery access and conservation.
