Precision-engineered, self-supporting showcase fabricated at Braeside for period artefact display in Hong Kong

Custom-built at EMT’s Braeside facility and reassembled at M+ Museum in Hong Kong, this 766-kilogram free-standing display case combines frameless architectural glass, electrical locking, and passive microclimate control for period artefacts.

Background & Scope

M+ Museum in Hong Kong required a bespoke, free-standing display case to house period artefacts within its gallery spaces. Standing independently at 1.45 metres by 3 metres, the minimalist, self-supporting unit was engineered to provide clear sightlines while maintaining precise environmental controls around delicate collection objects.

Crafted and fully assembled at EMT’s Braeside facility before being transported to Hong Kong for final reassembly, the showcase integrates physical security, lighting, and internal microclimate management into an adaptable architectural footprint designed for periodic gallery reconfigurations.

EMT engineered and assembled the 766-kilogram self-supporting framework at its Braeside workshop prior to site reassembly in Hong Kong. The base incorporates removable panels that allow gallery staff to manoeuvre the entire 1.45-metre by 3-metre showcase using standard pallet jacks during exhibition rotations.

Microclimate Management & Ground-Level Access

The frameless enclosure comprises four architectural glass panels joined with concealed flexible dust seals, paired with passive humidity controllers to preserve internal atmospheric stability. An oversized glass panel serves as the primary access door, governed by an electrical locking system that enables ground-level opening without requiring ladders during curatorial maintenance.

Integrated Visual Illumination & Cable Concealment

Internal illumination relies on a nine-square grid pattern of UV-stable LEDs fitted with Plexiglas Satin Ice covers, providing uniform, diffused light while shielding artefacts from ultraviolet radiation. EMT routed all electrical cabling through discreet internal corner profiles, eliminating visible wiring above the display canopy.
